Before you book
You don't need any Pilates experience. If it's your first time on a reformer at Refine, the Reformer Intro Pack gives you 5 classes for $100 to use within 5 weeks, which is enough to get comfortable on the machine and feel the difference. Book through the schedule at least 12 hours before class; online booking closes after that, and full classes open a waitlist.
If you're recovering from an injury, pregnant, or managing a condition, mention it when you book or tell your instructor when you arrive. If you'd like a fully tailored start, a private session is a good first step.
What to wear and bring
- Fitted activewear. Leggings or shorts and a top that won't ride up or catch in the straps and springs.
- Grip socks. Welcome for all reformer classes; they help your feet stay put on the footbar and carriage.
- Water. Reformer work is low impact but you will work hard.
- Leave the jewellery at home. Rings and long necklaces can catch on the equipment.
Arriving at the studio
Refine is at 1534 Niagara Stone Rd in Niagara-on-the-Lake, with free parking right outside. Plan to arrive 10 minutes early for your first class so your instructor can walk you through the machine and set it up for you. Late arrivals matter more on the reformer: if you're more than 5 minutes late, your spot may go to someone on the waitlist.
Meet the reformer
The reformer looks complicated, but it has only a few parts:
- The carriage: the padded platform you lie, sit, kneel or stand on. It slides along the frame.
- The springs: they connect the carriage to the frame and set the resistance. Your instructor will tell you which to use.
- The footbar: a padded bar you press against with your feet or hands.
- The straps: loops for your hands or feet that let you pull against the springs.
- The headrest and shoulder blocks: they support your neck and keep you from sliding off the end.

What happens in class
Every class is different, but a typical reformer class moves through the whole body. Expect a warm-up lying down with your feet on the footbar, then work for the legs, arms and core using the springs and straps, often finishing with stretches. Classes at Refine run 45 to 60 minutes.
Movements are slow and controlled. It's normal to feel shaky in muscles you don't usually use, especially the deep core, glutes and inner thighs. Your instructor will cue your breathing and alignment and make exercises lighter or harder for you by changing the springs. With no more than five people in the room, they can actually see what you're doing and help.
After your first class
You'll likely feel taller and looser right away, and a little sore a day or two later. Drink water, keep moving gently, and try to book your next class within the week. The equipment feels more familiar with every class. Want to understand how it compares to mat work? Read reformer vs mat Pilates.
